New State Application Information!

The State of Florida has recently changed the application to take the State exam.  You can obtain the new application form here or apply on-line at Professional Testing, Inc. .  The NEW fee for taking the State exam is $135 and is payable to Professional Testing, Inc.  The application is now only 2 pages long and is much simpler to complete.  NOW is the time to acquire your State Certified Contractor's license!  
Session I, 2007 begins on January 12 in Tampa, Orlando and Ft. Myers and covers the February and April 2007 exams.


Please Note: The deadline for the December exam is November 17th. The deadline for the February 2007 exam is January 18th and for April exam is March 22, 2007. Don't delay! Register NOW! Exam site seating is limited and meeting this deadline does not guarantee your admission to the exam. We recommend you apply as early as possible.

October, December, February & April Exams

Classes for the October and December 2006 exams began on September 8 in Tampa ,Orlando and Ft. Myers. Classes for February and April 2007 exams begin on January 12, 2007.  You can print out a class schedule in our Schedule section, you can register for classes in the Register section, and you can purchase books in our online Bookstore!

Freedom Tower designed to withstand jet's impact
Architects say the new Freedom Tower designed to stand on the site of the World Trade Center could withstand an impact from a commercial jet and that key elements would not be knocked out of place. The tower would feature a central vertical core fortified with a 3-foot-thick concrete steel wall.

Construction company agrees to pay overtime to Katrina workers
Construction firm Belfor USA Group settled a lawsuit with migrant workers who were denied overtime pay during the Hurricane Katrina cleanup. The company, which specializes in disaster recovery, agreed to pay $223,000 to the 163 Belfor subcontractors, many of whom worked seven days a week for 12 hours a day.

Developers shift focus to baby boomers
Residential, hospitality and retail developers are targeting baby boomers as the retiring generation is healthier and more free-spending than ever before. Boomers are willing to spend the money for luxury and convenience, so developers are focusing on areas where they want to live, namely the Sun belt and locations for vacation homes.

Clearwater resort opens renovated tower
The Clearwater Beach Gulfview Resort has opened a renovated tower featuring more than 100 new rooms on the waterfront in Florida. The tower's renovation is part of a $100 million Entrada development, a project that also will involve renovating the hotel's second tower, building a convention center and creating a 13-story hotel that could include condos.

Helical piers provide solution for soil setting
To combat soil instabilities on a recent project on St. Simons Island off the Georgia coast, Coastal Foundations installed hundreds of helical piers. Sometimes called screw piles, the three-and-a-half-inch helical piers created a foundation to soundly hold tons of weight above the marshy coastline of Georgia.

Gas prices expected to keep dropping
Gas prices are continuing to drop and could be down nearer to $2 per gallon by Thanksgiving, according to one gasoline analyst. Prices are expected to drop by 10 cents a gallon by the end of next week, according to the travel organization AAA.

Scientists study algae as biofuel source
Researchers at an Israeli-American industrial partnership are working to use algae as a means of producing the components for biofuels. Alga Technologies and GreenFuel Technologies Corp. are looking for the correct type of algae that feed off of polluting factory emissions and plan to get needed carbon dioxide by placing production plants near large carbon dioxide producers such as factories.

Researchers seek glue recipes that hold their weight

Despite some notorious adhesion lapses in places like Big Dig tunnels, adhesives can offer a stronger alternative to nuts and bolts in certain situations. The study of newer and better glues is "a very active field," one professor said, and the right compound could find a solid niche in the multi-billion dollar industry.

Cooling towers may pose amoeba health threat
Many commercial buildings' cooling towers may be housing infected amoebas, according to a U.S. study, posing a threat to the health of humans, researchers say. Of 40 cooling towers in industries, hospitals and universities tested for the study, 22 held infected amoebas, while only three of 40 tested natural environments housed them.

Female tower crane operator also known as "Granny"
Currently the only female tower crane operator in Ohio, and once the only female tower crane operator internationally, grandmother Cathy Hannah controls one of the most complicated and dangerous types of cranes to operate. Hannah completed working on the site of the new Middletown Regional Hospital in Warren County, Ohio, Monday and plans to make a quilt with a tower crane on it for the first baby born at the hospital.

Construction employment up despite drop in new home sales
Construction employment has increased 3% from a year ago, but new home sales have dropped 20% and experts expect the jobs trend will likely soon follow. Experts say the August employment figures may have stayed high due to houses that are still being finished.   USA TODAY
