New State Application Information!
The State of Florida has recently changed the application to take the State
exam. You can obtain the new application form
here or apply on-line at
Professional Testing, Inc. . The NEW fee for taking the State exam is
$135 and is payable to Professional Testing, Inc. The application is now
only 2 pages long and is much simpler to complete. NOW is the time
to acquire your State Certified Contractor's license!
Session II 2006 began on May 5th in
Tampa, Orlando and Ft. Myers and covers the June and August 2006 exams. Session
III, 2006 begins on September 8 in Tampa, Orlando and Ft. Myers and covers the
October and December 2006 exams.
Please Note:
The deadline for the August exam is July 14th. The
deadline for the October exam is September 15th and for the December exam is
November 17th. Don't delay! Register NOW! Exam site seating is limited and meeting
this deadline does not guarantee your admission to the exam. We recommend you
apply as early as possible.

Mississippi casinos experience rebirth
Only
eight months after Hurricane Katrina damaged much of the Gulf Coast gambling
region of the state, casinos in Mississippi are coming back strong: Three have
already reopened, seven more plan to follow suit in the coming months, and the
state also is drawing interest from new gambling entities.

As
more young people receive college educations, a career in construction is
becoming a tough sell, and general contractors are feeling the pinch as the
labor force dwindles. Some managers have gone so far as to take their pitches to
high schools in order to try to recruit students.

Test determines products' resistance to mold
Air
Quality Sciences says it has collaborated with the Greenguard Environmental
Institute to develop a test that determines the ability of new building
materials to resist mold growth. The system ranks materials on a scale of one to
four, with four representing the highest resistance to mold growth.

Government buildings get more sophisticated as philosophy changes

Buildings housing federal, state and local government facilities have become
much more sophisticated, Class-A buildings than in the past. One approach used
to improve efficiency and quality of buildings is installation of underfloor air
distribution and wire/cable, which can help cut costs and improve employee
comfort.

Experts urge companies to prepare for disasters: Commercial property owners
should prepare for hurricanes, disease outbreaks and other disasters before they
occur, experts say. Property owners and tenants should practice disaster plans
and communicate clearly, among other things.

Interest in green construction shoots up
In
2005, there was a 20% increase in the number of home builders focusing on
environmentally responsible building, and there is an additional 30% increase
expected this year, according to the initial results of a survey by McGraw-Hill
Construction and the NAHB. "Green home building is at a tipping point among the
builder population," said Harvey Bernstein, VP of industry analytics and
alliances for McGraw-Hill Construction.

Experts: UV exposure through glass windows a concern
While building architecture increasingly includes more and larger windows, it's
more important to make sure that people inside don't get exposed to the sun's
ultraviolet rays that come through the windows, health experts say. The experts
call for better development of glass products and sunglasses that help to
decrease the amount of UV radiation being filtered through to the skin and eyes.

Nuclear cooling tower demolished

A 499-foot-tall cooling tower at the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant in Oregon was
demolished by wrecking crews on Sunday. The tower took less than 10 seconds and
about 2,800 pounds of explosives to implode.

Earthmoving
machines to get much easier to operate
Caterpillar Inc. is working on a new
motor grader that will lack not only a steering wheel, but the dozen-or-so
levers in the operator's console that make the machine notoriously difficult to
master. The M-Series machines, due to begin production this fall, will have all
of the functions instead wrapped into two joysticks on either side of the
captain's chair.

Construction starts on the rise
The value of construction starts, excluding residential projects, increased to
$87.9 billion between January and April 2006, according to Reed Construction
Data. Starts in April rose 8.9% above the previous month, and were up 32.9%,
compared to April of 2005.

New
pavement system reduces road surface temperature
Nihon Kogyo's new pavement system uses the vaporization of stored water to lower
road surface temperatures. Installation of the Barrier-Free Road Cooling System
began in Kawasaki City in March.

Simple precautions could prevent trench deaths

The use of OSHA standards and four relatively simple safety steps could prevent
most of the 100 to 400 deaths and thousands of more injuries that occur each
year in trench and excavation cave-ins. The steps include having a trained
"competent person" on site, following general requirements, analyzing the soil
and utilizing a protective system.
