Building prototypes need to consider location, context, cost
In
planning a prototype for a brand's building design, various considerations are
essential, including the adaptation to a location, the image of the company and
the cost to attract the customer. Quickservice restaurants, for instance, may
have basic floor plans that remain the same, but the exterior must fit in with
the architecture of the area.

UPDATES ON HURRICANES KATRINA AND RITA
Several weeks later, our initial assessment of the impact of Katrina on the
construction industry still appears to be on target. The immediate consequences
of the storm on construction activity, materials availability and prices were
about as expected. The scale of the later, and much larger, impacts from reduced
economy-wide spending and rebuilding of destroyed or damaged property is still
partly uncertain. We will have a reliable reading on the economic feedback
impact about a month from now. So far it appears to be as modest as initially
expected. However, it will take several more months to accurately gauge the
size and timing of the rebuilding effort. It is clear already that a substantial
share of it will not occur on the sites of destroyed buildings in New Orleans.
Hurricane Rita added at least 10% to property destruction, nearly doubled the
amount of delayed work on ongoing construction projects and severely aggravated
energy supply and price problems. However, this impact was offset by the quicker
than expected return to at least partial operation of the New Orleans area ports
and energy facilities.
Cleanup of Rocky Flats weapons site near Denver concludes

The
Rocky Flats plutonium production site outside of Denver, predicted to take 70
years and $37 billion to cleanup when it was raided in 1989 by the Environmental
Protection Agency and the FBI, has completed a 10-year, $7 billion cleanup
effort. Cleared of hundreds of contaminated structures, the site will now be
prepared for a new life as a wildlife sanctuary.

Mobile handheld devices can make life easier for everything but your thumb. The
miniature keyboards designed to be controlled with only the thumb have ergonomic
and hand experts worried about the sudden added repetitive stress, and some
providers report already seeing an upswing in cases such as what's gaining
notoriety as "BlackBerry thumb."

Women-owned construction businesses on the rise
Women increasingly are putting their entrepreneurial efforts behind construction
businesses, entering the fields of plumbing, electrical contracting, custom-home
building and general contracting. Research shows the number of construction
companies owned by women increased by 30% from 1998 to 2004, whereas the number
of women-owned businesses in all fields grew 17.4% in the same period.

Greenspan: U.S. economy will weather storms
U.S.
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan on Thursday told Congress the economy
will not be seriously damaged by this year's devastating hurricanes, but added
the Fed was watching overall prices in light of high energy costs. "We are very
firm in the notion that this country should not visit the 1970s again in the way
of inflation," Greenspan said, adding that Congress should rein in deficit
spending.

Superdome roof repairs to begin

Work
was scheduled to begin to repair the gaping holes in the roof of the Louisiana
Superdome, although a decision on how the structure will be fully restored is
not expected until November. Officials initially discussed demolishing the
structure altogether because of hurricane damage and subsequent vandalism, but
some now say that with an aggressive effort, the dome could be operational
within 12 months.

Making buildings airtight can save heating, cooling costs
Efforts to make buildings more airtight can result in as much as a 37% savings
each year in heating and cooling costs, according to a new study from the
National Institute of Standards and Technology. While buildings in warmer
climates were less likely to see substantial savings, the improved airtightness
could offer benefits over time, according to the study.

A Fresh Perspective - Maybe you don't need a new job, just a new attitude.
(Career Seeker, Tampa Tribune, 11/13/05, written by Chandra Orr of
Copely News Service.)
Usually on Sunday mornings I have a cup of coffee and browse through the
Newspaper looking for something to peak my interest. Since I already have a
great job, I usually skip over the Career Seeker section but the words "a fresh
perspective" caught my eye and I just had to read further. Perhaps you will
agree.
"Feeling uninspired? It may not be your job. A lack of direction or a bad
attitude can be just as detrimental to career satisfaction as an overbearing
boss or thankless profession. Before bailing out for a new job, unenthusiastic
employees should try mending their mind-sets. Just like a relationship,
sometimes work needs an extra dose of passion.
You can choose to adopt a positive attitude. People have a lot more power to
shape their lives than they think they do. They may not be able to shape the
mechanics of their job, but they can shape the attitude that they bring to the
situation.
Choosing a positive attitude is a lot like forgiveness. It's not an emotion but
rather an intellectual choice. You have to choose to do the best you can with
what you have where you are. It may sound like a tall order, but there are a few
sure-fire ways to see work in a new light and spice up a dull job.
~See the big picture. It doesn't come overnight, but even the most tedious job
can bring personal rewards. Ask yourself, do you have a sense of purpose in your
job and in your life? If so, how does your job line up with your sense of
purpose? We have all kinds of people telling us what we should be but we need to
find out what we want to be.
At an unfulfilling job, it's easy to feel like a tiny cog in a giant machine,
but even the most sophisticated engine breaks down when one part is out of
place. Embrace the feeling and a send of purpose will follow.
Recognizing that you are part of a great, big mammoth machine and that you are
important can give you a sense of self-worth and importance in your job. Ask
yourself, what is it that I'm doing? How is it important? How does it fit in to
the big picture? You may have to stretch some if you have a totally meaningless
job, but even then it's a job and you get a paycheck. That's something. It helps
support your family or whatever your interests are."
~Focus on other people. Self-centered thinking only magnifies the negative. By
shifting focus to others, uninspired employees gain a new point of view. If you
can help other people, it puts your problems in perspective. You can always find
someone worse off that you are. Volunteer to help a co-worker finish that big
project, or just volunteer to clean the office kitchen. The effect is the same.
In doing so, you might have made a friend or at least an associate that will say
good things and make recommendations about you.
~Let go and laugh - a lot. Forget the guy in accounting that said those nasty
things two years ago. It's just not worth holding on to. Those wrongs that
you've suffered, be they real or imaginary, let go of them. If somebody really
wronged you, they only did it once and moved on. If you relive it over and over
again, then you are the one beating yourself up, not them. Letting go of the
past means embracing the present. By shifting the focus to the here and now, all
sorts of new opportunities for career fulfillment will present themselves -
including the opportunity for laughter. You need to learn to laugh, it releases
endorphins, makes you feel better and allows you to let go and be open. Laughter
releases the tension in you and allows you to do your job better. It makes you
more pleasant to work with. You can take a job seriously, but take yourself
seriously.
~Know when it's over. Employees may find that even with the best attitude,
their jobs just don't live up to their expectations. If, despite your best
efforts, you just absolutely abhor what you are doing, then start looking around
to find out what does turn you on. if you are turned on and can generate some
sense of passion, then you will be successful.
