chapters are dull and ordinary, others intense and exciting. The key to being a success

Contractors' perspective: If soil is poor, costs can soar
When
it comes to picking a proper development site, nothing is more critical from a
contractor's standpoint than soil composition, location of utilities and
topography. If the composition of soil is poor, for instance, costs can
skyrocket, and if utilities must be extended to the property, the city may have
to do so at a premium price to the developer.

Don't mix business with friendship

Friendship in the workplace can become a tricky
situation, because the focus at work should be the job first, says the author of
"Who's That Sitting At My Desk? How to Succeed by Mastering Work Relationships."
Occasionally very close friendships can survive the demands of the workplace, as
evidenced by Oprah Winfrey and her best friend and magazine editor Gayle King.
But in general, there are seven issues that colleagues should never discuss at
work.

Design flaws can be major mold culprit

Proper cladding and flashing details, along with wall assemblies that will dry
if exposed to moisture, are essential in keeping moisture -- and mold -- out of
walls and roofs. Design is also important, and six common design flaws can be a

Shortage of tall tires could cause construction, mining slowdowns

A worldwide shortage of tall tires used for heavy
machinery threatens to cause slowdowns in mining and construction industries.
Demand is said to be exceeding supply of the tires, which can cost up to $40,000
each, due in part to increased construction and mining activity around the world
and military equipment needs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Playground cancer risk lowered with use of sealants

Following reports than arsenic-treated wood was found mostly in playground
equipment and decks, government scientists found sealant works best to decrease
cancer risks. Oil- and water-based sealants or stains are preferred to paints
because they won't chip or flake, according to the Environmental Protection

INDEMNITY CLAUSES IN CONSTRUCTION
A recent case held that if the prime
contractor tendered a claim to a subcontractor and the subcontractor did not
defend it, and the prime contractor ended up defending the claim, the
subcontractor would have to pay for that defense even though the subcontractor
proves that the subcontractor was not negligent whatsoever.

Internet phone call service offers big savings for construction industry

A
new method for making phone calls over the Internet, known as Voice over
Internet Protocol, is being called a great fit for the construction industry.
Experts say the technology can offer immediate benefits by cutting the costs of
setting up phones at jobs and drastically reducing toll charges, since long
distance calls can be placed over the Internet and dialed through routing
sequences as if they were local calls.

Taxpayers in smaller markets pay much more for NFL stadiums
When
it comes to negotiating a good stadium deal for an NFL team, smaller markets
usually wind up having taxpayers foot much more of the bill, due to less
leverage from deals with local TV and radio, suite sales and other factors. A
review of financing for 10 recent stadiums found taxpayers in the five smaller
markets paid more than 80% of the cost of new stadiums, while taxpayers in the
five larger markets paid only 45% of the bill.

Game of golf is often a test

For
executives, golf outings are as integral to corporate life as board meetings,
annual reviews and holiday parties, CIO writes. The magazine recounts the proper
golf etiquette, including don't lie about your handicap, don't cheat and don't
talk while someone else is teeing off. But there are more subtle rules to the
game as well, such as following the lead of your golf partners when it comes to
discussing business on the links.

What is your lift truck telling you about its well-being?
MRO
Today runs through a list of signs and sounds operators should be aware of when
running a lift truck. For instance, scraping, screeching or grinding while you
raise or lower the forks with or without a load may signal a problem with the
rollers, and if brakes squeal or whine, the unit should be taken out of service
and checked over by qualified service personnel. "Relying on maintenance
professionals who are very familiar with lift truck operation and repairs is a
smart addition to the maintenance plan," one expert says.

"The longer I live, the
more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more
important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education,
than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other
people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or
skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the
attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... The only
thing we can do is play on
the string we have, and that is our attitude.
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I
react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes. "
