Experts: Beyond "sustainable," building design can be productive

Architects are getting much more proficient with the use of the "technofix,"
which involves applying technologies that use up fewer resources, generate less
toxicity and pose less of a threat to natural habitats, to meet environmental
building criteria. But simply being "sustainable" shouldn't be enough, argue the
authors of the new book "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things," who
say nature is a perfect model for how good design can be productive and
abundant.

Space-Age Compaction Machines Will Roll Into North America by
Early Next Year
If
Captain Kirk were an equipment operator, this would be his chair. On the right,
a single joystick steers. To the left, a color computer screen shows travel
direction and speed. The one-piece console rotates automatically as the operator
moves the machine from forward to reverse. All that’s missing is sound advice
from Mr. Spock.Mounted
independently of the frame, a climate-controlled cab slides 12-in. side-to-side
for visibility. Underneath, two access doors swing open and a hydraulic hand
pump slowly drops the engine block to the ground for service.

Survey shows workload taking a
toll on many Americans

One-third of 1,003 Americans surveyed reported
feeling chronically overworked, and more than half of the respondents said they
felt overwhelmed at some point in the last month by the amount of work they had
to complete. Multitasking is another problem -- more than half of those surveyed
said they have to work on too many tasks at once in a typical week.
