Underwater hotel planned in Bahamas

Plans to build an underwater luxury hotel in the Bahamas are the latest in a
string of visions to build living or lodging quarters under the sea. In the
latest effort, planned to be submerged 50 feet under water near the Bahamas'
Eleuthera Island, guests could access their $1,500-per-night rooms via an
escalator.

Despite technology, employers still want workers who can communicate

Many
employers are noticing that in this age of e-mail and Palm Pilots, college
graduates are lacking adequate communications skills. While specific skill
requirements may vary among different jobs, the ability to speak or write
effectively is important for entry-level jobs as well as executive and
blue-collar positions.

Lean Thinking Works in
Construction Too
"Lean thinking" can make a big difference in cutting costs for contractors,
experts say. Contractors first need to understand what is waste and what is
value, and how waste can be reduced.
If contractors want to reduce their costs, they have
to understand what is waste, what is value and how to cut out the waste that
lingers in between steps. New concepts have changed manufacturing, not new machines
or automation. Accomplishments such as lead times of less than
a day, defects at less than 3 ppm, delivery rates of 99%-plus and 50 inventory
turns a year.

Schedule Compression Can Hurt
Productivity on Job
Schedule
delays, changes and acceleration are facts of life for new construction
contractors, who are often entitled to more money, more time or both as a
result. While it might be easy to calculate how much the extra rental on the
man-lifts will cost, it’s difficult to quantify how much a schedule change
affects labor hours.
If 1,000 man-hours are left in a job, you can’t hire 1,000 workers and get
everything done in an hour. Up until now, it was difficult to explain exactly
how that happens and put a hard number on the added man-hours caused by schedule
compression.

Aluminum worth consideration for roofing
Cost
and misconceptions about structural limitations have prevented many contractors
from using aluminum in roofing. But recent innovations in panel design should
give contractors reason for another look, and while it's still more expensive
than steel, aluminum has life-cycle benefits in some regions that could make it
more cost efficient.

Gas prices expected to skyrocket

Americans may face sticker shock at gas pumps in the next few weeks as analysts
predict gas prices may jump 24 cents a gallon. With light, sweet crude oil
trading as high as $55.20 a barrel before closing at $53.57, the
result at the gas pump is expected to be a nationwide average price of about
$2.16 per gallon for regular unleaded, exceeding May's record of about $2.06 per
gallon.
