Sensor-laced Concrete Promises to be Strong
and Smart Savings
Concrete is giving up its secrets. Prodded by engineers and contractors
frustrated with having to imagine, rather than measure, the changing forces
inside sullen masses of hardening mix, scientists and technologists are working
to perfect sensors that finally allow a look inside. Sensor technology is riding
high on a decade of heady advances in electronics, computers and communications.
As sure as concrete, sensors embedded into highways, bridges and buildings are
rising stars of construction.

Glass cloak of new 7 World Trade Center to
offer conservation, security
The high-end glass skin that will wrap the new 7
World Trade Center building will not only illuminate the building's interior and
block heat, but the curtain wall framing the building's lobby will also give the
building the distinction of meeting the same safety specifications as federal
government buildings.

Seismic retrofit of Golden Gate Bridge advances
The
second phase of a decade-long effort to retrofit San Francisco's Golden Gate
Bridge is nearing completion. The effort has involved extensive modification of
the bridge, while taking care not to destroy the complex structure that already
exists. In the second phase, contractors have been retrofitting the bridge's
southern approach.

Green roofs growing in popularity for building owners
Increasing problems with storm water runoff, particularly in urban areas, are
prompting greater interest in green -- or garden -- roofs. In addition to
reducing runoff, green roofs can decrease a building's cooling costs by 20% to
30% for a single-story building.

The
Largest Bucket Wheel Excavator in the world?
This excavator is built by Krupp, seen here crossing a federal highway in
Germany in route to its destination (an open-pit coal mine). It is cheaper to
move the machine like this than to construct or re-assemble it on-site. For more pictures and

Construction Statistics
On a monthly basis the
numbers of housing units authorized by permits, started, sold or completed are
tracked. The dollar value of all construction put in place each month is
measured. Residential construction in 30 metropolitan areas across the country
each quarter, and the sales of new one-family houses in those areas each year
are tracked. The dollar value of residential improvement and repair work each
quarter are tracked and published. The Census of Construction Industries, taken
every five years, provides the most comprehensive overview of the construction
industry available. Learn about statistics on various construction related facts

Higher Prices for Metal Products Sticking Around
After last year's strong increases, prices for
structural steel, reinforcing bar, stainless steel sheet and plate and
aluminum sheet all remain stuck at their new higher price levels (see charts
below). Prices for Grade 60 reinforcing bar have slipped 3.3% from last
September's peak but remain more than 35% higher than in January 2004.
Structural steel prices show no sign of easing, with prices for channel and
wide-flange beams 25% above a year ago and prices for I-beams 30% higher
than at the start of 2004.

The
Industry Needs A Code of Conduct
The recent
survey on ethical practices in our industry published by FMI was alarming to say
the least. Not alarming so much in the results, which obviously were
unflattering, but alarming in that the proposed solutions have not in any
earnest fashion been embraced by industry leadership.
