New Florida Codes Bring Mixed Success
In a truly unlucky day for millions of homeowners, Hurricane
Charley blasted through parts of southwestern and central Florida on Friday,
Aug. 13. Winds of up to 145 mph blew apart utilities, buildings and homes even
though some were built under codes implemented after Hurricane Andrew hit south
Florida in 1992.
Hurricane Charley, which struck southwest Florida as an unexpectedly powerful
Category 4 storm, damaged many structures despite building codes implemented
after the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. It is likely that legislators
will take another look at codes in the aftermath of Charley, but one architect
points out that "there's only so much you can do [in the way of protection] when
winds reach what they did with Charley."

Invention Claims to Kill Mold by Using
Electricity
Inside what appears to be an oversize suitcase are a network of
tubes, wires and metal hardware and a fan. This contraption is a cold plasma
generator. It applies high-voltage electricity to ambient air, producing large
volumes of ionized oxygen - better known as ozone - and ionized oxides of
nitrogen.
It's a mold-killing machine.

Attachments improve
productivity for concrete contractors
A wide variety of attachments can
make a concrete contractor's task much easier, reducing labor expenses and
increasing productivity. Skid-steer loaders, compact track loaders and mini
excavators have highlighted the value of attachments and shown how they can
lower individual project costs.

Women moving into nontraditional
careers
More women are opting for
careers in fields traditionally dominated by men, such as construction or
engineering, according to Wider Opportunities for Women's Work4Women site.
Work4Women says the majority of qualifications for such careers are not
gender-related, and many offer better advancement options and wages than
traditionally female-dominated professions such as teacher or nurse.

Workers
with chronic illnesses drive up employers' health care costs
With baby boomers aging fast and medical advances increasing life spans, more
people than ever are living with chronic medical problems, and many are in the
workplace. As many as 40% of workers in the U.S. have at least one chronic
health condition, and the working sick can cost employers twice as much in
health care, experts say.

For safety company, it's
nothing but net
Although the destructive
winds of Hurricane Charley devastated many commercial and residential buildings
in southwest Florida, the safety netting system on an eight-building condominium
project on Charlotte Harbor stayed intact. The safety nets, made by Safenet,
are installed to keep workers from falling out of wall openings on building
sites and "were designed to withstand a lot of force," says Dave Kelly, owner of
Safenet sister company Safe-Site.

Florida Changes Building Codes Between Storms
With the
buzzsaw blade of another major hurricane taking aim at south Florida, the
Florida Building Commission, meeting in Fort Lauderdale, focused its attention
on proposed changes to the state's building code. The group headed off, by
amendment, a provision that would have eliminated engineered wind design
provisions for about 25% of the state.

Test Findings Implicate URS Design For Tampa Toll Road Pier Problems
Fundamental design flaws in the concrete foundations of an elevated
reversible-lane toll road in Tampa have been cited for the problems that have
delayed completion of the $350-million Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway. The
owner sent the designer, URS Construction Services, a letter of indemnification
on Aug. 27 asking for a remediation plan.

"Steel-belted duct tape"
offers industrial-strength reinforcement
Using the same steel-belt
technology used in radial tires, a Maryland company has developed what some are
calling "steel-belted duct tape." The product, called Hardwire, comes in various
configurations that resemble duct tape, and it is being used for structural
upgrades and even to increase blast resistance and strengthen plywood.

Florida building codes changed as
Hurricane Frances approached
With the second major hurricane of
season at its doorstep, the Florida Building Commission defeated a provision
that would have eliminated engineered wind design provisions for about 25% of
the state. The provision would have allowed for the building of structures
without hurricane straps and without reinforcing in the masonry.

"There's no thrill in easy sailing,
When the sky is clear and blue.
There's no joy in merely doing
Things which anyone can do.
But there is some fulfillment,
That is mighty sweet to take,
When you reach a destination,
You thought you couldn't make."
