Insulation with vapor retarder
keeps moisture out
Fiberglas and mineral wool insulation materials help
maintain constant temperatures in facilities that, in turn, can keep down energy
costs. These materials, used in conjunction with a vapor retarder, also can
reduce condensation to help prevent mold and corrosion.

Contracting,
engineering firms share tips for longevity
Many contracting and engineering firms have come and gone, but there are some
that can still boast roots back to the 19th century. Those that survived
generally attribute their longevity to a willingness to take risks, while
keeping individual egos in check.

Building trades gain respect from
workers, economists
The construction industry has been a boon to the economy during the recession
and has helped keep national jobless rates low, economists say. Many builders
say their biggest problem is a shortage of skilled workers and that their
industry is often overlooked as a growth field, but community colleges are
reporting more interest in one- and two-year construction training programs.

Turning trash into pavement
The latest trend in trash disposal involves devices
that can zap garbage into oblivion -- or at least reusable material. One such
device, made by Startech, in Wilton, Conn., and the Solena Group in Washington,
D.C., scorches garbage with molten hot plasma in oxygen-starved containers and
transforms the trash into stone-like material that can be reused for uses
including pavement or kitchen tiles.

More properties hopping on green
building bandwagon
Construction of energy-efficient, healthy "green" buildings has become a
rapidly-growing trend, with the numbers of commercial and high-rise residential
building space certified under national green building standards increasing from
8 million square feet in 2000 to 149 million square feet today. Buildings
qualify through efforts such as using recycled materials, improving ventilation
and using fewer toxic paints and adhesives.

Concrete gains favor in home
design, architecture
Concrete is catching on as more than just a dull utilitarian material for roads
and sidewalks. Architects and residential designers are increasingly turning to
concrete, not only for its durability and strength, but for its flexibility in
color, texture and its usefulness in everything from floors to countertops and
other interior applications.

Mini-mills scrambling for scrap steel in
hot market
As China buys up large quantities of scrap steel to
fuel its construction boom, U.S. producers are raising their prices in response
to the reduced availability. Two of the nation's biggest mini-mills this week
upped their per-ton steel surcharges by $25 to $125 a ton, and many contractors
are having to adjust their rates in turn. "We can't hold our prices for 30 days
anymore," said the president of a residential remodeling firm.

Tampa building may reach new
heights
Whiting & Ashley LLC says it hopes to build a
593-foot-tall, 50-story condominium tower next to the Hillsborough River in
Tampa, Fla. Construction on the tower, which would be the tallest building in
the city, could begin as soon as early 2005.

Construction and renovation of K-12
schools at record level
Despite the recent economic downturn, school
construction and renovations are booming, particularly in populous states with
rising enrollments. Although enrollments nationally are expected to grow
slightly in future years, experts disagree whether the building boom will
continue.

Try blue for bottom plates
Wood treated with a new product called
borate, which gives it a blue color, is being touted as an alternative to "green
wood," in which the chemicals can eat up standard nails. The president of the
Lumberman's Association of Texas says the blue wood is a good choice for bottom
plates in residential construction and a workable alternative to
chromated-copper-arsenate-treated wood.
