Analysts are calling 2004 a "transition year" for the U.S. economy. Concrete
construction and equipment manufacturing are expected to rebound after several
stagnant years. By mid-year, cement gurus are forecasting a moderate rise in
interest rates, which would begin to cool down the record-high home-building
boom and spur more nonresidential starts.

Greenspan pushes for Social
Security cutbacks
Unsettled by the prospect of future budget deficits, Federal Reserve Chairman
Alan Greenspan caused a stir this week by proposing cutbacks to Social Security
benefits. While noting that "the degree of uncertainty about whether future
resources will be adequate to meet our current statutory obligations to the
coming generations of retirees is daunting," Greenspan proposed raising the
retirement age and reducing future cost-of-living adjustments.

Going to the pump? It'll cost you
The price for regular unleaded has topped $2 per gallon in some area of the
U.S., and the trend may get worse. Experts reportedly are concerned gas may run
out entirely in some regions of America because of issues with the nation's
supply system.

Lumber producers get busy
After a brief holiday lull, tight wood supply and high demand, especially for
plywood and structural paneling, have resurged to drive up prices in the U.S.
Smaller builders may feel the pinch, but larger construction outfits are not
expected to be affected by price increases of 60% in some cases.
The Wall Street Journal
Construction spending down;
consumer spending up
The Commerce Department reported today that
construction spending was down by 0.3% in January, the first drop since May,
though overall levels of construction spending remained near an all-time high.
Consumer spending rose 0.4% in January, matching analysts' expectations and
economists said the increase was a good sign that the economy continues to
recover.

"Green" homes enter the
mainstream
Builders are constructing environmentally friendly homes in increasing numbers,
responding to a demand for houses that lower power bills and use fewer natural
resources. More than 13,000 green homes were built in 2002 alone, and builders
now are exploring ways to make them more affordable and appealing to mainstream
buyers.

The Commune By
The Great Wall, Beijing, China
- The Cantilever House
One look around the expansive metropolitans of
China and there's no denying that a building boom dominates this country.
Hi-rises tower over centuries-old temples, technologically advanced buildings
mingle with low-income housing and you can't help but notice modern styling
mixing with old-world flavor. And this phenomenon is not strictly occurring in
the bustling Chinese cities. Outside of Beijing, in the mountainous and
picturesque area of Yanqing County, a new outcropping of modern housing is
intermingling with one of the oldest relics in China, the Great Wall.
