Tribute in Light to Return this September 11
New York City Mayor Bloomberg and New York Governor Pataki announced in a joint statement yesterday that the "Tribute in Light," the twin beams of light projected from the site of the former World Trade Center, will be returning on September 11 to commemorate the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
The tribute, which contains the power of over a million light bulbs, originally took place from March 11 until April 13, 2002 . This year’s tribute will take place on sundown, September 11 and will be part of a full-day tribute to the anniversary that includes a citywide moment of silence, and the reading of the names of those killed in the attacks. Children related to those lost will be reading the names. Officials also said the tribute will return in successive anniversaries of the attacks.

WHAT'S THE LATEST SCOOP ON THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS?
Down the road...
In 12 days, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will run through a tunnel at Lincoln Financial Field and officially begin defense of their Super Bowl title. Given that the opponent will be the arch-rival Eagles, the venue Philadelphia's polished new stadium and the setting Monday Night Football, the atmosphere is likely to feel more like the postseason than Week One. When wider isn't necessarily better
The use of wide thermoplastic single-ply roofing puts more pressure on the roof deck and the way it is attached to the structure. This has raised concerns over the use of 10- and 12-foot-wide membranes in extremely windy situations such as a hurricane or other major storm.  Buildings.com/SmarterBuildings

Infrared Cameras Reveal World of Pavement Problems
State transportation departments and private contractors have found a way to determine where a pavement mat will turn into a pothole. Their technological crystal balls are infrared cameras that photograph hot mix asphalt during the pavement laydown process. The devices look for patches of asphalt that are too cool and will not compact correctly. www.enr.com

When the NorthEast Power Grid Trips, Interlinked Networks Stumble As Well
The blackout that knocked out powerplants in six states and Ontario also triggered major disruptions in large segments of the transportation and water and wastewater treatment systems. Grounded planes in Canada and the U.S. stranded hundreds of thousands of air travelers in dark terminals. Millions of people that normally get home via New York City’s subway system or commuter rail lines scrambled to find alternate means when electrified lines went dead at the start of rush hour Aug. 14.
