Value Engineering - Cutting Corners Can Shortchange Kids
Value engineering frequently endangers American education.  This claim may seem far-fetched, but a strong argument can be made that many common value engineering decisions have harmful effects on school building quality that also adversely impact our children's learning experience.
These days the term "value engineering" often seems a misnomer when applied to school construction projects.  Value engineering is supposed to identify a decision making process where the owner and the design/construction team controls costs while maintaining a building's long-term value.  Unfortunately, construction managers frequently present value engineering choices that shorten school buildings' life spans, lead to higher incidence of building component failure and have a negative impact on education.

Equipment Tracks and Trends
Japanese Robots Research Team Develop "Humanoid" Equipment Operator

A consortium of researchers in Japan believes firms performing unusually dangerous work could benefit from robots that operate heavy equipment. It may sound like a science fiction story, but the team's engineers say they already have demonstrated a prototype with potential for use on hazardous construction and cleanup sites. Indoor mold still states' biggest concern
Of all indoor air quality bills passed by state legislatures this year, indoor mold issues were the most commonly addressed. While many of this year's 60 pieces of IAQ legislation are still going through the necessary processes to reach the floor, Texas already has passed three indoor mold-related bills.
The number of mold damage suits and the size of claims are increasing, with about 10,000 suits pending nationwide. Insurers, builders and other business groups say that overzealous lawyers and increased media attention are to blame for damage claims that are not supported by scientific evidence.

It's easy being green
Building with an eye on the environment does not mean embracing a complex set of building codes or managing buildings in a revolutionary way. The basics of being green mean striving for efficiency, sustainability and productivity. Buildings.com offers an in-depth look at the emerging green building movement.  Buildings.com

Smart as a brick
A brick that could monitor a building's conditions and save lives has been produced by researchers at the  University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.  When fixed into a wall, the "smart brick" could detect a structure's vibration, temperature, and movement.  Such data could be critical to rescue workers determining the structural integrity of an earth-quake damaged building, or to firefighters battling a burning skyscraper.  For further information visit www.construction.com or http://rdmag.com.

Owner Controlled Insurance Programs:
Owners Like Them and Why Contractors May Not
Owner Controlled Insurance Programs (OCIPs) are becoming a standard feature in the construction industry.  Insurance brokers have heavily marketed OCIPs to owners, promising cost savings.
The programs, upon initial inspection, are simple and attractive.  The owner buys insurance for all the participants in a construction project.  The owner then requires the participants to reduce their price by eliminating all of their insurance costs in exchange for owner-provided coverage.  The owner expects to save money by discount-purchasing of insurance and by avoiding contractor markups on insurance costs.  This promise is what sells OCIPs.  For more in-depth information on this visit http://www.constructionweblinks.com.
