How to build motivation in today's workplace
Trapped. It's a word workplace experts often use these days to
describe what many American workers feel on the job. They point to a number of
factors behind that feeling: high unemployment, a tight labor market,
and limited opportunities for advancement. For more information go to
http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0317/p15s01-wmwo.html.
OSHA to get more power
The
Occupational Health and Safety Administration will be given more power today to
handle companies that consistently violate workplace safety rules. Companies now
will face contempt of court charges and enforcement will be better coordinated
amongst OSHA inspectors. Read more about this at

Florida Construction: 2002 Finishes 7 Percent Ahead of '01
Fueled entirely by the residential market, Florida construction contract
activity finished out the year 7 percent ahead of 2001. According to the Dodge
Analytics unit of McGraw-Hill Construction, December's construction activity
followed this pattern:
- For the month, non-residential construction was down 43 percent compared
to the same period a year ago. This month's total was roughly $538.8 million,
compared to last December's $941.9 million.
- Residential construction stayed strong, increasing by 21 percent over last
year. The most recent total for this category was slightly more than $1.9
billion, compared to the nearly $1.6 billion of a year ago.
- Non-building construction also declined. The most current figure was
roughly $335.1 million, down by 21 percent compared to last year's $422.6
million.
For 2002 as a whole, only the residential category showed growth. In all,
2002 contracts for future work totaled approximately $42 billion, compared to
the roughly $39.4 billion reported for 2001.
By category, 2002 totals were as follows:
- Non-residential activity was down by 5 percent for the year, with roughly
$10.3 billion reported. That compares to the nearly $10.8 billion reported for
2001.
- Residential construction was up 19 percent for the year, totaling just
over $25.6 billion. Last year this category totaled approximately $21.5
billion.
- Non-building construction ended 15 percent down compared to 2001. This
category was estimated at slightly more than $6 billion, down from the
year-ago figure of nearly $7.1 billion.
