Why Do We Need Contracts Anyway? Seven Reasons to Have Contracts...especially in the
Construction Industry We need contracts to protect each other from each other. Lump sum, cost-plus, design-build, guaranteed max...etc. contracts.
First, contracts serve as a
means of protecting each other from each other. If we could all trust each
other we would not need contracts. However, we cannot and this is especially
so in the construction industry.
Second, contracts serve as
means of documentation of planned services and assets to be exchanged during
the course of a project. Important not only when determining the tax burden,
but also in planning for either the performing of work or the transfer of
assets.
Third, contracts serve to
finalize a deal in the mind of the project players. It serves as the kickoff
event on many projects.
Fourth, contracts often
communicate the scope of work to be rendered and the extent to which each
party is involved in the differing aspects of the project.
Fifth, contracts serve to
determine what items or information the other party needs from a particular
party to perform the services needed in the contract.
Sixth, contracts work towards a
completion date -- a grand finale for the project. This allows the final user
of the project a time frame to occupy the structure.
Seventh, contracts assist in
the planning of future projects by setting the tone for additional work on the
project and/or new work.

Collaborative Trends - Internet is a Key Tool in the Construction Industry Ten years ago, general contractors thought a fax machine, a two-way radio
and a beeper were all they needed to do business. Five years ago, they
added cellular phones to their list of critical tools. Three years ago, a

Uniqueness - The Key to Success - Subcontractors
show how being different can be better! Without subcontractors, where would the
industry be? We wouldn't have plumbing, roofs, walls, etc. As the
world constantly changes, so do the different sectors of the construction
fields. More subcontractors are bidding and there is a larger emphasis on

Most of us don't think
enough about what we'd do in an emergency, and that's especially important for
small businesses. Being prepared can make all the difference. The SBA and The
Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., have teamed up to provide
state-of-the-art, risk-management training materials and online interactive
tools for small business owners. This co-sponsorship will give small business
owners access to risk-management resources that usually are available only to
larger companies. The materials were developed by The Hartford's loss-control
experts and are available at selected SBA service locations nationwide.
Each year, a large number of small businesses experience firsthand the
devastation that a disaster causes. Small
business owners now have access to a library of educational materials developed

audio tapes with practical tips for small business owners and printed materials
to help small businesses manage their risks. Several risk-management seminars
